Editor Kees van Dooren from the Dutch newspaper Boerderij was intrigued at EuroTier in Hanover when he saw the moving farrowing pen on the Meier-Brakenberg stand. He was therefore particularly interested to see the pen in use on a farmer's farm, especially as the farmer in the north-west of Münsterland in Germany already has three years' experience with this modern farrowing pen. In the pen, the movement area for the sow is designed with pleasantly cool, stable triangular and cast iron slats, which have a good manure pressure outlet. On the other hand, this floor is unattractive for the suckling piglets, who always return to their warm, safe piglet nest. Overall, the pen is very clearly laid out, with very low housing walls and free movement for the sow. The free-range sows ‘don't wait a moment and start sniffing at each other:’ Overall, the sows in this pen are significantly less aggressive and, according to the farmer, the time spent in this farrowing pen is also significantly less than in his old barn with smaller farrowing pens.
